The episode starts off with Kirk talking to Spock with some typical Vulcan bullshit quip about humans. He might be the most interesting character on the show for my money though.
an old style ship recorder. Aka a god damn trashcan. I guess I shouldn't be surprised what multipurpose objects exist in the future when my toilet and toothbrush both have bluetooth
The musical cues on this show continue to be great. It's the first episode to have the iconic intro which is just a treat. Plus we get to start meeting the whole crew.
Part of me likes that for the most part TOS was forced to be self contained stories. Due to the nature of broadcast at the time it only made sense. I'm not sure if newer series are more drawn out in structure, that will be interesting to see.
Maybe it's worth noting that Ill be mostly watching the remasters for TOS. Might switch in and out just to see differences. As a person with zero nostalgia I think they did a wonderful job maintaining the style while updating it mostly for better clarity. Maybe old-school fans feel differently.
This episode has a lot to do with ESP. I think this was probably a bit more interesting when it originally aired, although now it's easy to imagine a future where we'd have some level of that through technological means.
When the guy starts talking like he's possessed it reminds me a bit of that twilight zone episode where they have to do everything the kid says or he'll magically punish people. When he says he doesn't understand what's happening to him as he gains power it reminds me of the movie Lucy, one of my favorites.
I've gotta say, some of the big ideas on this show age remarkably well. The concept of "maybe a post human evolution could be a better being, maybe it's too dangerous, etc." Is something that becomes more realistic a scenario every day.
"Above all else a god needs compassion."
As the guy and eventually girl from this episode transition into a sort of godhood they get their own planet to play with. Yadda yadda yadda, we get a Kirk hand to hand combat sequence. A bit boring of an episode but it's fine. There's a wild looking laser rifle I like.
